sp7 Soil organic matter

Over the last 10 years we have observed a significant positive relationship between plant biodiversity and carbon and nitrogen storage in soil. The mechanisms behind carbon storage, however, are still unclear.

The on-going collection of long term data will allow us to unravel interactions with biogeochemical effects on dissolved organic matter as well as carbon and nitrogen stocks. Especially the effect of plant traits or functional diversity, measured as variation in trait values in the Jena Experiment will allow us to investigate how carbon sequestration and nutrient values are affected through plant traits (e.g. rooting traits).
