spZ2 Database & Syntheses

The Jena Experiment offers a unique opportunity for synthesis of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, as data of various disciplines, from species interactions to element cycling are collected within the same plots. From the beginning, data gathering in the Jena Experiment was guided by the central project which also provided advice on experimental design, sampling location (link: Go to the Jena Experiment Information System).

More and more our team focuses on synthesis work. We therefore catalyze analyses that are carried out by all scientists of the research unit. Leading synthesis work including meta-analyses of the results obtained in the Jena Experiment and in natural and managed ecosystems. The patterns, associations, or relationships among all this data can be analyzed from different perspectives and summarized into useful information. Jena Experiment is therefore planning joint workshops during the current phase:

Network workshop:

Ecosystem process rates can be sensitive to changes in biodiversity and trophic structure. The linkages in real food webs are far more complex than simplified trophic-levels suggest, but it currently remains unclear how much of the complexity is needed to maintain essential ecosystem functions. In a series of three workshops we will integrate food web and ecosystem approaches to examine how changes in aboveground-belowground network structure can simultaneously affect multiple ecosystem functions.
